FreeRTOS, kernel or operating system ?

Hi everybody,

I am starting to learn FreeRTOS and something is not clear for me. I can read that FreeRTOS is a real-time kernel but I can also read that FreeRTOS is an real-time operating system. Something is not logic with this.

Thank you for your help

I’m not an expert in legal matters, but I can provide my idea:
a) FreeRTOS is and has surely a kernel
b) when your definition of OS means task scheduling and maintenance, memory handling, preemption techniques, intertask messages and the likes, then FreeRTOS is also an OS.

FreeRTOS is NOT an OS if the definition includes higher level services like HAL, driver support, OS integrated services.
